Dear Congressman Weiner;
On behalf of the Concerned Residents of Jamaica Estates we thank you for facilitating the August 13th meeting at the Utopia Jewish Center in which you addressed the acute flooding conditions in Queens. We fail to comprehend the DEP’s rationale of approving a project that will exacerbate flooding in our Queens community and create sewer back ups not only at the proposed Saint John's dormitory site but at all the homes in the immediate area. Needless to say, many lawsuits will emanate from this ill conceived decision as home after home suffers damages and contamination from having raw sewage back up into their homes. Aside from being fiscally irresponsible during this austere economic time, it poses a serious health hazard not only to the residents but to the students alike.
Congressman Weiner, our homes are not only residences of many years, but our retirement nest eggs and our children's inheritance. We are angered that St. John's University and the City of New York are able to infringe on our life plans and negatively impact our property values and do so with impunity.
I trust that you will share this information with your colleagues in government and encourage Commissioner Lloyd to revisit her decision to approve the sewer plans for the off campus SJU Henley Road dormitories.
