St. John’s University has entered into a secret agreement with the Kamali Organization to build a seven story, 485 bed dormitory on Henley Road on property where six one family homes once stood. St. John’s University and the Kamali Brothers are taking advantage of a New York City zoning loop hole which allows dormitories to be classified as "community dwellings" thereby allowing for the building of dormitories within residential neighborhoods. St. John’s University did not discuss or inform the Jamaica Estates community or local elected officials of their plans to build a seven story, 485 bed dormitory and once the plan was discovered St. John’s, President, Father Donald Harrington, continued to “deny” involvement with the project until official New York City Department of Buildings records were produced with the schools intentions clearly defined St. John’s University has demonstrated complete disregard for the safety and security of the Jamaica Estates Community and its students.

A seven story, 485 dormitory will have major negative impact on utilities, water and sewage, access to streets, traffic patterns, and parking within a community originally designed for one family homes.

St. John’s University has failed to maintain a safe environment within its on campus dormitories and reported the following crimes were committed on its Queens Campus from January 2003 through December 2006:
